In my role coordinating rush orders for Dorman’s aftermarket operations, I’ve learned that order size, part category, and invoice total tell you almost nothing about how much pressure sits behind the phone call. A $15 part can be the difference between a vehicle going back to work and a shop losing a customer’s trust.
Here is my position: if you treat small orders as a nuisance in automotive parts, you fail the test that actually matters. The customer who needs one small part on a deadline is watching how you respond. And they will remember that response when a bigger order shows up next year.
I’ve handled enough emergency shipments to stop being surprised by what a “small” order can do. A shuttle van down because of a failed transmission control module. A BMW drive shaft that has to arrive before a long weekend. A work truck that needs the Dorman 42002 spark plug non-foulers because it keeps fouling plugs and cannot afford another week of downtime. Those were not big transactions. All of them mattered.

We had the module in stock. The distributor ordered it before noon, it shipped the same day, and the mechanic installed it the next morning. The transaction was worth maybe $450, which is not a line item that moves anyone’s quarter. But it saved the van owner hundreds in rental costs, kept a delivery route alive, and made an independent shop look like the person who solves problems.
If you have ever been the one waiting on a part while a customer’s vehicle sits half-assembled in your bay, you know how quiet that bay gets. I don’t want to be the reason the silence stretches into another week.

European vehicles have a way of exposing blind spots in a parts supplier’s catalog. People assume a BMW drive shaft is something only a dealer would stock. I remember one independent shop that had a BMW on the lift with a vibration. The customer had a trip planned for Friday. The dealer said two weeks. A used unit was a gamble. The shop called us, asked whether our replacement BMW drive shaft was in stock, and got it in time to finish the job.
That was one unit. It probably didn’t show up in any forecast. But to that shop owner, it was the difference between solving a problem and looking like just another supplier that couldn’t be bothered. I’m not exaggerating: trust compounds exactly this way.

You also see this pattern in the questions customers ask. “Where is my catalytic converter?” is a common one. It sounds basic, but it usually comes with serious context: a check-engine light, an emissions failure, or a converter stolen overnight. The customer is not asking for a geography lesson. They are trying to understand the size of a repair before authorizing it.
If a supplier treats that question as too small, they are signaling that the small customer is not welcome. If they explain it and then offer the right replacement part, they earn trust. That might sound soft, but it is the kind of trust that leads to a call later for a transmission control module, a drive shaft, or a cooling system component when the stakes are higher.
To Be Fair, Small Orders Do Cost More to Serve
I understand why some suppliers set minimums. Picking, packing, and shipping a $15 item costs almost as much as the same work for a $500 item. A customer ordering a few parts at a time isn’t covering the warehouse space or the support time. On a per-dollar basis, small orders are genuinely more expensive to serve.
But then again, the problem isn’t the size of the customer’s order. The problem is a one-size-fits-all process that makes every order feel expensive. Suppliers who handle this well separate fast-moving catalog orders from custom engineering work. They build a simple process for stock parts and a deeper process for large programs. What they don’t do is make a shop owner apologize for needing a $30 part.
The most frustrating part of my job is hearing someone say, “I almost didn’t call because it was only a thirty-dollar order.” You’d think the aftermarket would have fixed that feeling by now. But plenty of companies still act as if small customers are wasting everyone’s time. That’s a red flag, and it costs more than any rush fee.
I should add that I’m not arguing large programs are overrated. Long production runs, stamping work, forging work, aluminum extrusions—those are what keep advanced manufacturing healthy. The small order is the entry exam. How a manufacturer or distributor handles the entry exam tells customers a lot about how they will handle the big test.
Bottom Line: Respect the Order in Front of You
In my eight years coordinating these shipments, the orders I remember are rarely the largest ones. They are the orders where a vehicle was down, a customer was stuck, and the supplier answered the phone like it mattered. That pattern plays out every day, whether the part is a BMW drive shaft, a Dorman transmission control module, or a pack of Dorman 42002 spark plug non-foulers.
Small doesn’t mean unimportant. It means potential. The shop that calls you with one unusual request today is often the same shop that needs a complete undercarriage order or a production supplier tomorrow. If you’re in the automotive parts business, small orders aren’t a favor. They are a signal. Treat them with the same urgency you would give your biggest account, and you’ll build a lot more big accounts along the way.
