This is a case where identification is everything. A differential service kit is specific to the internal parts, and ordering the wrong fluid additive or friction modifier is an easy mistake if you just assume you have limited slip. Verify first.

But what about junkyard parts?

I can already hear the counterargument: what is wrong with a used socket or a used pigtail? Nothing, in the right situation. I am not going to tell you a 15-year-old connector can not work. It can. But it is still the same material that survived in the same salt and heat that killed the original. If you are fixing a weekend project and time is not money, a wrecking yard part might be fine.

This is the context-dependent piece of my advice. At my counter, most orders need to get a vehicle back on the road within a few hours. A new pigtail takes two minutes to inspect and comes with no accumulated corrosion. A junkyard pull might look fine today and fail six months later. I went back and forth on this with one fleet customer. On paper, the used harness was half the price. My gut said the repair would get called back. We ordered the new socket instead. The truck is still running a year later.

Bottom line
